Cultural Shifts
Throughout time, there as been an endless amount of cultural shifts. From talking to parents, I've learned a few things about what their culture consisted of. It was clearly different from the culture that surrounds me today. Back when my parents were my age, society seemed to be an overall safer place. They would walk everywhere, and didn't rely so heavily on cars to get them places. Even around my neighborhood, which happens to be right around Siena, places were different. Every time I drive around with my mom, she points out stores and tells me what they used to be before I was born. She'll tell me how she'd walk to these places all the time and they'd be so filled with life. Neighborhoods had better relationships than they do now. Everyone on the street actually talked to each other, unlike now where people can't even name their neighbors. People would do more as a community because there wasn't as much pressure to be involved with the secular world. People were more concerned about other people than themselves. Their values were different than some values of today. I think as the world continues to throw out new ideas and things to do, people feel more compelled to do what seems cool rather than do something that could be better for a community. They're more concerned for themselves rather than others. I think people have been influenced by society to be focused on themselves, which leads them to invest less time with community or group events.
