Shifts In Community

My parents often speak about how all kids in their neighborhoods would comet together and play games. In the winters they would all come together and shovel off ponds so they could play hockey. If you ever ran out of eggs or flour you could go next door and take one from the neighbors. I thought I grew up in a close knit neighborhood because I'm aquainted with most houses on the street, however the relationship I have isn't even close to the relationship my parents had with their neighbors. Now it seems like people stay in their house or keep to themselves. I think thechnology is largely at fault for keeping people confined in their house. Instead of kids playing outside, they are glued to vidoe games or online chatting. I think that technology has caused people's activity level to decrease so instead of running around outside people tend to sit inside. As a whole, I think people are obsessed with checking their e-mail or talkin on the phone instead of socially interacting with others. I think this is what largely contributes to people looking to better themselves instead of betting the community surrounding them. There is the constant competition for who can have the newest computer, or who has the best surround sound, these material things don't contribute to bettering the community.
